Quick Links: How to Apply a Flea and Tick Squeeze-On
Flea and tick control products are safe and effective when used as directed. For example:
- Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs kills fleas in as little as one hour and ticks in as little as three – faster than the leading veterinary brands. Sergeant’s Gold also protects against mosquitoes and kills flea eggs and larvae.
- Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Cats protects your cat for up to 30 days against fleas, ticks, flea eggs, flea larvae and mosquitoes, including ones that carry the West Nile virus.
Look at the Label to ensure the product you select is right for your pet.
Sergeant’s recommends pet owners look for the following information on product labels:
- Look for the dosage amount for the size and age of your pet. Products are specially formulated for pets based on weight.
- Make sure the weight of your animal matches the dosage on the product package.
- Make sure your pet meets the age requirements stated on the product package.
This information is nearly always on the front of the product package, making it easy reference for consumers as they shop.
For example, Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs comes in four different dosages according to the weight and size of your dog.
- 9-20 pounds
- 21-39 pounds
- 40-60 pounds
- 61 pounds and over
Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Cats comes in two different dosages according to the weight and size of your cat.
- Under 5 pounds
- Over 5 pounds
- All flea and tick product labels indicate for which species the product is intended. Never use a flea and tick control product intended for dogs on a cat, and vice versa.
- Check the label for active ingredients and warnings. By knowing the active ingredient, you can compare effectiveness and safety.
- Look for the manufacturer’s contact information should you have any questions or need help. Typically this information can be found at the bottom of the back label. And, as with medications for humans, carefully read and follow all label instructions.
Additional Key Tips to Follow:
- Healthy Pet? Determine if your pet is healthy and in the correct age range before using any flea and tick control product. Before using a Sergeant's product, contact Sergeant’s 24-hour hotline (800-224-7387) or your veterinarian if your pet is weak, feeble, pregnant, nursing, aged, using medication or has other health issues.
- Weight & Age: It is very important to make sure your dog meets the minimum weight requirements stated on the product package. For example, Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs is not recommended for dogs under 12 weeks of age or dogs under 9 pounds.
- Avoid Double-Dosing: Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick squeeze-on products are designed to work alone and NOT in combination with other flea and tick control products. Determine when you last treated your pet with a flea and tick product – this includes flea and tick squeeze-ons, shampoos, powders, sprays and collars – and only reapply as directed on the product label. All products will vary. Check the product packaging or call Sergeant’s or your veterinarian to ensure the recommended time has passed since the last application before applying the new product.
- Separate Multiple Pets: Be sure to separate multiple pets after using flea and tick control treatment so that they do not rub off or lick the product off of each other. As with any flea and tick control squeeze-on, getting product in a dog’s mouth could cause drooling or foaming.
- Do Not “Self-Dose”: For example, if you have a 20 pound dog, do not use half the dose intended for a 40 pound dog.

HOW TO APPLY A FLEA AND TICK SQUEEZE-ON
Flea and tick control products need to be used as directed to safely and effectively treat your pet. Every flea and tick product has different application instructions, which is why it is important to read each label carefully. We do NOT recommend doubling up on flea and tick treatments – this includes flea and tick collars, shampoos, sprays, etc. Many squeeze-on products are designed to work alone and are sufficient in killing and repelling fleas, ticks and mosquitoes without additional products. Again, it is important that you do not double up on any flea and tick control treatment.
To safely and effectively apply Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-on for Dogs:
-
Be sure to read the label and package insert instructions before application.
-
Remove tube from packaging.
-
Hold the tube away from your face and body and cut the top of the tube at the notches to avoid getting it in your eyes. Invert the tube over your pet and use the open end to part the pet’s hair. Squeeze the tube firmly as you begin applying at the back of the neck ending at the midpoint between neck and tail.
-
Make sure your pet cannot lick the product from the area of application.
-
Separate all household pets for 24 hours after application to avoid ingestion or product transfer.
