SERGEANT’S GOLD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Pre-Application
How often can I apply the product? |
Sergeant’s Gold Squeeze-On for Dogs can be reapplied every four weeks. Sergeant’s Gold repels fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to 4 weeks so you should not have a problem with reinfestation. |
How old does my dog need to be before I can apply Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs? |
The product can be applied on dogs and puppies older than 12 weeks of age. |
My dog weighs under 9 pounds, can I still use this product? |
No. Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs is not formulated for use on dogs under 9 pounds. The product is specifically measured for a certain weight of a dog and you should use only the product that is labeled for your dog’s weight class. |
How do I determine the correct dosage for my dog? |
Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs comes in four different dosages according to the weight and size of your dog.
It is very important to apply the proper dosage according to the weight and size of your dog. Do not attempt to “adjust” or “self-dose” your dog with any flea and tick medication. |
I am concerned about all of the warnings and precautionary statements on your product label. Is this product even safe to use? |
Yes. Sergeant’s spent six years in development and research of Sergeant’s Gold to ensure it was safe for pets. The EPA regulates all pesticidal products, and mandates that each of the precautionary statements you are reading appear on the product. The statements are intended to inform the consumer of possible issues that can occur with the product and steps to take if they do occur. In almost all instances, you will not experience issues with the product if you are following the label instructions. |
My dog is 12 years old. Your warning says not to use it on aged animals. Can I use it? |
Every breed of dog is different. If you have an older dog, it’s important to check with your veterinarian to determine if your dog is aged for its breed. If your dog is not healthy, debilitated or his immune system is compromised, we recommend checking with your veterinarian before using any flea and tick control product. |
Can I use a dog flea and tick product on my cat if I dilute the solution? |
No. Never use a product intended for a dog on a cat and vice versa. Only use flea and tick control products specially formulated for its intended species. |
Application
How long will it take for the product to begin to work? |
Sergeant’s Gold Squeeze-on for Dogs is designed to kill new fleas in one hour and new ticks in three hours. Sergeant’s Gold also kills flea eggs and flea larvae, controlling reinfestation for up to 9 weeks. |
I am confused by the directions on the package. Do I apply the product just between the dog's shoulder blades or do I run it all the way down the dog's back? |
That depends on your dog. If your dog is not able to turn around and bite or lick its back, we recommend running the Sergeant’s Gold applicator in a straight line down the back, starting between the shoulder blades and ending at midpoint between the neck and the tail. If your dog can turn around and reach its back with its mouth, we recommend starting between the shoulder blades and going only as far as you know the dog cannot reach. |
My dog still has fleas on his belly. Can I apply the squeeze-on directly to the stomach? |
No. It is important that you follow the directions on the package. |
I have purchased the package for dogs size 9 to 20 pounds and have one dog that is over 33 pounds and another dog that is under 9 pounds. Can I still use this product? |
No. The product is specifically formulated for a certain weight of a dog. Use only the product that is labeled for your dog’s specific weight class. Do not use on dogs under 9 pounds. |
I have more than one pet in my house. Is it safe for my dogs and cats to be around the dog I treated with Sergeant’s Gold? |
No. Keep a treated pet away from other pets for 24 hours to keep them from grooming each other and risking ingestion of a pesticide. |
Post Application
Can I bathe my dog with a flea and tick shampoo and then apply the squeeze-on? |
No. You may not realize it, but flea and tick shampoos are also medicated. By bathing your dog in such shampoo and then applying a flea and tick control squeeze-on you are double-dosing your dog. If you decide to bathe your dog with a flea and tick shampoo, we recommend waiting at least one week before applying the squeeze-on. If you bathe your dog with a regular (non-insecticidal) grooming shampoo, you can apply the squeeze-on as soon as the dog's coat is completely dry. |
Can I put a flea and tick collar on the dog after I have applied the squeeze-on? |
No, we do not recommend using ANY other product in combination with a flea and tick squeeze-on. The squeeze-on product is designed to work alone and is sufficient in killing and repelling fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes without additional products. Again, it is important that you not double up on any flea and tick control treatment. |
Can I pet my dog after I have applied the product? Can my children play with our dog? |
Both you and your children are safe to pet and play with your dog after the squeeze-on has been applied. It will take about 24 hours for the product to spread and dry on your dog, so if you pet and/or play with your dog within this time frame, you can simply wash your hands with soap and water once you are finished. |
My dog seemed to be having a reaction to the product so I bathed her, but the symptoms are still present. Is there something else I can do for her? |
First, you should determine whether you used a detergent-based shampoo when bathing and how many times you bathed the dog. If you only rinsed the dog with water, you can repeat the bath with a dish soap (like Dawn) at area of application. Then repeat again with dish soap. Monitor your pet for the next 24 hours. If you observe any abnormal reactions, contact your vet immediately. |
I accidentally applied the dog squeeze-on to my cat. What are the signs of a reaction and what should I do if the cat has a reaction? |
Sergeant’s Gold Squeeze-On for Dogs can be highly toxic to cats. Regardless of whether the cat is showing signs of a reaction, you should immediately bathe the cat with a dish soap (like Dawn) at the area of application and a detergent based shampoo/soap over the entire cat with large amounts of water. After the bath, take your cat to the veterinarian immediately. It is important to take the Gold Squeeze-On for Dogs product packaging to your vet’s office so that he or she can obtain the active ingredients from the label. |
I accidentally used the product on my young puppy that is under 12 weeks before realizing that I was not supposed to. What will happen and what should I do? |
More than likely your puppy will not experience any adverse affects. However, as a precaution, we recommend bathing your pet with a dish soap (like Dawn) at the application sight in order to remove the product from the skin. Shampoo your puppy again and monitor your pet for the next 24 hours for signs of a reaction. If you observe any abnormal reactions, contact your vet immediately. |
What are the common signs of an allergic reaction to a flea and tick product? |
Typical signs of an allergic reaction include skin sensitivity (such as redness or a rash), hair loss and discoloration at the application site, itching or a loss of appetite. If your pet shows signs of an allergic reaction, we recommend you thoroughly bathe your pet with a regular, non-insecticidal shampoo and large amounts of water. (Symptoms will normally improve within a few hours to 24 hours of the bath). If signs continue or worsen, call Sergeant’s 24-hour Consumer Affairs Hotline (1-800-224-3787) or your veterinarian. |
